Flexible Seating Options

We would  like to show the advantages of some flexible seating options that should be considered before buying your handicap van. We have several scenarios in which you could need handicap mobility equipment.

The first is someone with a handicap brought on by old age, such as arthritis, cardiovascular and circulatory problems, as well as breathing/ lung ailments. For most of these people a mobility scooter works to relieve the stress that walking would cause. We also find that a Companion Seat is helpful to these individuals. The seat aids them in entering and leaving the vehicle. The companion seat is pictured on the right and is available for most makes and models of Minivans. A second model called the Mobility Seat is available for most makes and models of automobiles

The next consideration is the scenario of a handicap person who is either to young to drive or to severely handicapped to be able to adjust to driving. In this case we need to provide adequate entry and wheelchair securing lockdowns for the handicap occupants safety. See our accessories page for details on this type of equipment.

The next scenario is that of a family member who can drive. In this case we would want to purchase a vehicle with what would be referred to as Flex seating. To further define flex seating, imagine that our handicapped family member might be in the passenger seat one day, the drivers seat the next day, and in the middle row on another occasion. For that reason most manufacturers offer flexible seating arrangements that allow for the easy removal and installation of seats. This allows a Wheel Chair to replace any one of these seats. Be sure to consider this before buying your handicap van.

The last scenario is that of a handicap drive who must drive themselves on a daily or almost daily basis. Their vehicle must be equipped to meet their needs. Some may require that the front drivers seat be removed and they would drive from their wheelchair which is locked into place behind the wheel. We offer wheelchair lockdown equipment for just that purpose in our accessories page. Or they may Drive from a normal drivers seat leaving their wheelchair in behind the drivers seat. To aid them in gaining access to the drivers seat we can also provide a Transfer chair which is designed to retract and swivel to allow transfer from your wheelchair to the front drivers seat. Transfer chairs are also available for the passenger side seat. We carry the full line of transfer seat bases by BDI. Each one is designed for different applications from drop floor minivans to full size vans with different specifications

The flexibility offered in seating is very broad and should be looked at in detail before configuring your handicap van.
