Wheelchair Lifts

Back in 1974 when we started, only the side mounted wheelchair lift on a full size conversion was available. Today we have many varieties and selections in regard Back door wheelchair lift for full size vansto the type, style, location, stowage location, and even the source of power to operate the lift. The picture to the left shows a rear mounted platform wheelchair lift. It is large enough to not only allow the entry of a wheelchair into the van, but will also allow a mobility scooter to be loaded. This rear mount style has the advantage of not requiring the space provided by a handicap parking space as the entry is through the rear, not the side. It also has the advantage of leaving the two side doors open for regular passenger and cargo loading.

The more common side entry wheelchair lifts provide for the easy access into and out of the van, but do require the traditional space provided by a handicap parking space to be able to extend the lift into the load/unload position.Side entry wheelchair lift The picture below is of a larger wheelchair lift that can be used for loading a passenger with a mobility scooter as well as a wheelchair. You can see how far out the Lift extends from the Van.

Many variations are available in regard to the stow or travel position of the lifts. Some model fold into the vans doorway and fit neatly inside the door. Others retract into a space between the the floor and the bottom of the van for out of the way storage. An yet others stow under the van, outside the passenger compartment. These variations are available on both the rear and side entry wheelchair lifts.

The lifts also have a variant as to what powers the lift. Some use hydraulic cylinders, others are electric driven. Wheelchair lifts (VS. ramps) are generally found on full size vans (VS. Minivans). The defacto standard for the conversion of a van into a handicap van is the Ford e-250 Conversion Van. We carry all makes and models, but most manufacturers prefer to use the E-250 as it was designed for conversion use. Below is a Ford E-250
